Who can bring the claim
Wrongful death standing is statutory: typically a surviving spouse, domestic partner, children, and in some cases parents or others who depended on the person who died. A survival action (the decedent’s own claim) is separate and often proceeds with the estate. Getting the plaintiff mix wrong wastes months.

Funeral costs are the small number. The case is financial support, household services, and the loss of the relationship, plus the underlying liability (the crash, the property owner, the dog owner, the insurer).
